(TEXAS) — Last week, Monica Roberts, a pioneer in transgender journalism passed away. She was the founder of the award-winning blog, TransGriot, which has been covering the trans community since 2006. She has been a national leader setting the standard for media competence on trans issues.
The Texas House LGBTQ Caucus issued the following statement: “We mourn the loss of Monica Roberts, an icon for transgender rights, especially in her advocacy for black transgender women. She was a trailblazer, driving the conversation forward about the violence against trans people when no one else was. By celebrating the trans community in her coverage, she singlehandedly transformed the way trans people are represented by the media. Her work has been inspirational to many, and her blog has helped individuals persevere through thoughts of suicide. We honor and continue her work; we stand committed to fighting for affirming representation and the rights of our transgender communities.”
